Liposuction Skin Port FAQ
Answers to the questions surgeons and OR teams ask most about liposuction skin ports. Can't find yours? Call +1 (610) 868-8400 or email info@exo-port.com.
What is a liposuction skin port?
A liposuction skin port is a small tube placed in the access incision. The cannula passes through the port instead of rubbing directly against the skin edge. Exo-Port skin ports are made of medical-grade thermoplastic and are secured with a silicone suture disc.
Why use a skin port during liposuction?
Repeated cannula movement causes friction at the incision edge, and energy-assisted techniques can add heat. This can lead to friction burns, hyperpigmentation, hypertrophic scarring and other port-site complications. In a 2024 study of 60 patients, port-site complications fell from 33% without port protection to 7% with it. That study used a tubing-based protector, not Exo-Port.
Are skin ports used with VASER, PAL and ultrasound-assisted liposuction?
Yes. Exo-Port is designed for procedures where the incision needs protection from frictional or thermal abrasion, particularly power-assisted (PAL) and ultrasound-assisted (UAL) liposuction. Skin ports were part of the skin-protection measures in the original VASER pilot clinical study.
Which Exo-Port size do I need?
Match the port to the outer diameter (OD) of your cannula: Ø3.0 mm for 3 mm cannulas, Ø4.0 mm for 4 mm and Ø5.0 mm for 5 mm. For expanded-tip or raised-feature cannulas such as the Becker basket or Gilliland, choose a port 1–2 sizes larger than the cannula OD, or use Exo-Port MAX.
What is Exo-Port MAX?
Exo-Port MAX is a one-piece skin port with barbed side walls that help prevent accidental removal. It is designed for cannulas with raised features. MAX Fig. 1 fits 2–4 mm cannulas, and MAX Fig. 2 fits 4–6 mm cannulas with raised features.
What comes in an Exo-Port pack?
Each Ø3.0, Ø4.0 or Ø5.0 mm pack contains 5 skin ports, 5 obturators and 5 suture discs. MAX packs contain 5 one-piece ports. Sutures and towels are not included.
Are Exo-Port skin ports reusable?
Yes. Exo-Port skin ports are reusable and autoclavable. Follow the Instructions for Use for cleaning and sterilization.
What are the suture discs for?
The medical-grade silicone suture disc holds the skin port at the incision site. Each disc has 8 anchor points for a firm yet flexible hold. Replacement discs are sold in packs of 10 per size.
Can I try Exo-Port before buying a full pack?
Yes. The Exo-Port sample pack ($75) contains one each of the Ø3.0, Ø4.0 and Ø5.0 mm skin ports with obturators and suture discs, so you can find the right size for your cannulas.
Where are Exo-Port skin ports made?
Exo-Port skin ports are made in the USA.
